The Metropolitan School of Dance in Oklahoma City is dedicated to providing hope to those who feel forgotten. Their medium is dance.

There is a rising number of youth in the OKC metro who face staggering difficulties and few avenues to cultivate agency and creativity. The Metropolitan School of Dance provides programming that works to curtail negative activity in these groups by providing safe spaces where they can make positive choices.

And for years, participation in the Metropolitan’s programs has been growing.

The underserved communities of children, teens, and young adults whom the Metropolitan serves continue to dedicate themselves to their craft, and Director Pitts (know affectionately as “Mama Fran”) exuberantly encourages members of the community to attend shows and experience these students’ accomplishments first hand.

As a small organization providing for a very big need, a decrease or loss of funding from the Oklahoma Arts Council would be devastating for the Metropolitan School of Dance, the students who thrive there, and the city that is made more vibrant by their success.

This story celebrates 50 years of the Oklahoma Arts Council and how the state’s investments have positive ripple effects on communities across Oklahoma. See other stories or follow this link for more information.
